Ukraine will ask the UN to approve the confiscation of Russian assets.

Ukraine will propose to the UN General Assembly the adoption of a resolution regarding Ukraine’s acquisition of Russian assets as reparations for the war, writes The Guardian. Recently, senior officials from the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine discussed this issue with the leadership of the Foreign Ministry of Great Britain, along with colleagues from Germany, France, and other EU countries, and with the assistant to the US Treasury Secretary, Elizabeth Rosenberg. The parties discussed the creation of an international compensation mechanism, with which it would be possible to confiscate previously frozen Russian assets. The UK and Europe’s sanctions legislation  currently allows states to freeze the assets of the Russian Central Bank and some oligarchs. However, this regulatory framework does not provide permanent confiscation or transfer to the Fund for the Restoration of Ukraine.
