Ukraine is working on two projects with the capacity to produce up to 1,700 MW of pure hydrogen.

Among the most developed hydrogen projects in Ukraine is the H2U Hydrogen Valley project, which is being implemented by the Voden Ukrainy company. Two renewable hydrogen plant valleys are being created through the project. However, the projects are still unstable given the lack of large public investment as a result of the war.

In the project’s first stage, a 100 MW electrolysis capacity will be built in Odesa, which is expected to increase to 200 MW in the future. Electricity for production will come from wind turbines and thermal power stations. The water needed for electrolysis will be taken from the Danube.

The second hydrogen valley is in Transcarpathia. A plant with an electrolysis capacity of 1,100 MW, possibly expanding to 1,500 MW, will be built on a 120-hectare area. The project includes an SPP with a capacity of 120 MW and the possibility of scaling up to 1,200 MW and a wind farm with a capacity of 160 MW.

The hydrogen that will be produced is intended to be exported to a metallurgical plant in Kosice (Slovakia), which wants to switch from coke to hydrogen as a fuel source.
