Gas transit to Hungary via Ukraine resumed.

The transit of Russian gas to Hungary through the Berehove border point with Ukraine resumed on October 3 after a temporary suspension. This is illustrated by the data of the Hungarian operator of the gas transmission system (GTS) FGSZ. The fact that the transit of gas through the Ukrainian territory to Hungary had stopped was reported by the Operator of the GTS of Ukraine (OGTSU) on October 1.

Ukraine was surprised and disappointed with Hungary’s decision to sign a new long-term contract with Gazprom in Budapest on September 27, 2021. The agreement will provide gas supply to Hungary bypassing Ukraine, said the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. “We view this as nothing but a political, economically unfounded decision, which has been made to the benefit of the Kremlin and to the detriment of national interests of Ukraine and Ukrainian-Hungarian relations”, reported open4business.

Hungary will annually receive from Russia 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas: 3.5 billion via Serbia through the Turkish Stream gas pipeline and its overland extension, and 1 billion cubic meters via Austria. The new contract is for 15 years with the possibility of terms renewal in 10 years. Most of the volume will through a new interconnector on the country’s border with Serbia. Until now, most of Hungary’s gas import have been from Russia, supplied through Ukraine.
