Ukraine will start the construction of new power units based on American AR1000 technology.
The government of Ukraine has decided to begin the development of technical documentation for a new type of reactor that has never been built in Ukraine. According to Ukraine Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko, Ukraine has ended the era of the atomic energy generation based on Soviet technology. The approximate term of completion of the construction and start-up of the two power units at the Khmelnytskyi NPP is 2030-2032, although the course of hostilities may affect the timeline. The cost of one power unit is estimated at $5B. Westinghouse’s AR1000 reactor is an III+ generation reactor with significant advantages compared to the Soviet VVER-1000, 13 of which are in Ukraine today, especially with regard to safety, technical and economic indicators.
