Ukraine must build over 10 GW of new production capacity in 10 years.
According to Ukrenergo Chairman of the Board Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, Ukraine can build new power plants and join the European electricity market in less than 10 years. This requires appropriate market and regulatory conditions. The Ukrainian energy system needs investment in new capacities not only to maintain the course of the green transition but also to replace power plants damaged by Russian attacks.
Ukrenergo’s modeling of the further development of the energy system, recorded in the Report on the Assessment of Generating Capacity Sufficiency, indicates that Ukraine will need more than 10 GW of new capacity. In addition to almost eight GW of wind and solar generation, the system will require highly maneuverable capacities for balancing, which includes up to 1.5 GW of gas-fired production, up to 1.5 GW of thermal power plants using biofuel, and one GW of energy storage capacity.
