Two hundred Ukrainian soldiers will master Abrams tanks by autumn, and training on Western fighters will start in the summer.
Senior officials of the US Army told CBS News that the third of 12 weeks of training for Ukrainians on Abrams tanks is underway. The expected completion of the training roughly coincides with the fall delivery of 31 M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. The training is taking place in Germany using specially equipped tanks because the promised Abrams are undergoing repairs.
Since February 2022, the US has trained more than 11,000 Ukrainian military personnel on various platforms. Currently, the US is conducting training for about 1,700 Ukrainians.
In addition, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that after lengthy consultations, several member states have pledged support for training Ukrainian pilots on Western fighter jets. This will begin in the summer. He clarified that after resolving all technical issues regarding the training of Ukrainian pilots, the Alliance will discuss the supply of these aircraft to Ukraine.
