Opinions: What does the West expect from Ukraine’s war against the Russian Federation in 2024?

Russia’s war against Ukraine will be exhausting and positional, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda believes. He admitted that Ukraine’s partners expect the counteroffensive mounted by the nation’s Defense Forces to change its character.

“Ultimately, they will wait until one of the countries reaches the point where it can no longer continue the war,” Nauseda said.

US and European officials are discussing the redeployment of Kyiv’s forces from the “failed counteroffensive” to a stronger defensive position in the east. The US wants Ukraine to start negotiations with strong positions. The EU is also guided by the acceleration of Ukraine’s path to NATO membership to “put Ukrainians in a better position for negotiations” with Russia.
