Zelenskyy launches the biomethane market in Ukraine, which will help attract international investment.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed into law legislation regarding customs control and customs clearance of biomethane transported by pipeline across the customs border of Ukraine. The new law is expected to positively contribute to:

  1. development of a new sphere of energy production
  2. fulfillment of international obligations regarding decarbonization
  3. compliance with Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) requirements when exporting products to the EU
  4. increasing Ukraine’s export potential
  5. Attracting international investment to the energy sector’s development and restoring regions of Ukraine using new technologies

Biomethane transported by pipeline across the Ukrainian customs border will be subject to the same customs control and clearance as natural gas.

According to the new law, customs clearance of biomethane will be carried out based on information on the volumes of biogas or other types of gas from alternative sources, which, during movement through the gas transport system, can be replaced by the appropriate volume of natural gas or their mixture due to their physical and chemical characteristics.
