Ukrainian graphite is being tested for use in lithium-ion batteries.
BGV Group has completed laboratory and semi-industrial tests on the additional purification of graphite to battery quality, 99.99% purity, and the subsequent production of spherical graphite (SPG).
The construction of a mining and enrichment complex at the Balakhiv graphite deposit in the Kirovohrad region is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2026. As of the beginning of the year, the company has completed a preliminary feasibility study and, in partnership with the Finnish company Metso, is conducting basic engineering work for an enrichment plant that will produce high-quality graphite concentrate with a carbon content of 97%.
In 2025, the company will begin design work on a plant to produce SPG. The BGV graphite plant is expected to become one of the largest in Europe, with a design capacity of 50,000 tons of graphite concentrate, 19,000 tons of which will be suitable for producing spherical graphite for lithium-ion batteries.
Additionally, the company plans to enter the international beryllium market and has conducted verification drilling, along with chemical, mineralogical, and technological research in preparation to do so.
