Ukraine has surpassed Russia in trade with Germany for the first time in its history.

The trade turnover between Ukraine and Germany has exceeded that of Russia’s for the first time, according to Vitaliy Ivashchuk, a representative of the Embassy of Ukraine in Berlin.

“In 2024, for the first time since 1992, when separate statistics have been kept for Ukraine and Russia after the collapse of the USSR, our country has overtaken the aggressor state as a trade partner of Germany,” he said.

He noted that trade relations between Ukraine and Germany are developing rapidly not only at the interstate level but also through interregional and intercity partnerships, which “are an auxiliary bridge for business contacts at the local level.” Among the most promising industries for German business, Ivashchuk highlighted the restoration of Ukraine, energy (particularly green), IT, and digitalization as key areas for the development of bilateral trade relations and investment.

“And, of course, the defense-industrial complex, where close cooperation has already been established and where there are outstanding prospects for development in the coming years,” he added.
