Ukraine has lost the capacity of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant for a decade.
The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant will be able to be restarted only seven to eight years after liberation, as it depends on the reconstruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, said Prime Minister’s adviser Yuriy Boyko.
“The construction of the hydroelectric power station will last from five to six years from the moment of its start. The reservoir took two years to be filled when this station was first built. The construction of the station does not mean the automatic appearance of water that the Zaporizhzhia NPP will be able use to feed the cooling basins and ensure the safe operation of reactors,” he explained.
According to him, the deadline for the return of the ZNPP to Ukraine’s energy system greatly impacts the formation of its future energy strategy because it is the largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine and Europe.
