The new price caps on the electricity market will make it profitable to import electricity in the winter, but to unify the energy grid with the European one, they must be canceled and prices equalized.
The National Commission for Regulation in the Energy and Utilities Sectors has declared the need to abolish price restrictions on the electricity market (price caps) in 2024.
As Forbes reminds its readers, the State Regulator plans to set new price caps that will be in effect until April 1. “The task is to go through the winter with them,” says a member of the National Commission. He explained that the main purpose of the changes is to make the import of electricity profitable in winter to avoid possible shortages.
At the same time, if the new price limits do not help encourage imports to Ukraine, UKRENERGO will have to ask neighboring countries for emergency assistance, which is 1.5-2 times more expensive than commercial prices.
However, next year Ukraine must abolish the maximum prices for commercial electricity to integrate its energy grid with the European one. After that, electricity prices in Ukraine will equalize with prices in neighboring countries.
