The European Parliament and the Council of EU have reached a preliminary agreement on continuing trade liberalization with Ukraine.
Thus, import duties and quotas for the export of Ukrainian agricultural products to the EU will be suspended for another year, until June 5, 2025. However, in the event of a significant disruption to the EU market or the markets of one or more EU countries due to Ukrainian imports, such as wheat, it is guaranteed that the EC can quickly implement any measures it deems necessary.
An emergency brake may also be applied for particularly sensitive agricultural products (poultry, eggs, sugar, honey, etc.) if imports of these products exceed the average volume of imports registered in the second half of 2021, and throughout 2022 and 2023.
In addition, lawmakers approved the EC’s commitment to discuss permanent tariff liberalization with Ukraine as part of the Association Agreement review process. The European Parliament is expected to vote for this resolution in April, with subsequent approval by the Council.
