“I believe that we should be ready for expansion by 2030. It is ambitious but necessary. It shows that we are serious“, said European Council President Charles Michel on August 28 in Slovenia.
Six Western Balkan states – Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Montenegro – are at different stages of joining the bloc. Last year, Moldova and Ukraine received candidate status. Georgia is waiting for this status.
Michel noted that candidates must carry out reforms to ensure an independent judicial system, fight against organized crime and corruption, and align their foreign policy with EU member states to join the bloc. He called on all applicants to resolve bilateral conflicts before joining the EU.
