The EU will help Ukraine secure 4.5 GW of generation capacity and will provide an additional €160M to get through the winter.

The EU will help Ukraine repair 2.5 GW of capacity this winter and export 2 GW of electricity to Ukraine. With these actions, the EU will cover more than 25% of Ukraine’s energy needs for the coming winter, Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, said.

The EU’s energy support for Ukraine on the eve of winter includes three components: repair, connection, and stabilization. It is planned to restore 2.5 GW of capacity, approximately 15% of Ukraine’s needs. In addition, the EU will export 2 GW of electricity to Ukraine, which accounts for approximately 12% of the country’s winter needs.

The EU will also provide Ukraine with an additional €160M financial aid package to get through the winter. Of this amount, €100M will be revenue from Russia’s frozen assets in Europe. Part of this money will be spent on repairing energy facilities damaged by Russian attacks, and another part to provide solar panels to 21 hospitals in Ukraine. The remaining €60M will be provided as humanitarian aid.
