The EU does not plan on negotiating with Russia regarding gas transit through Ukraine, while Kyiv is open to some options.

The European Commission does not plan to engage in any contact with Russia to continue the transit of Russian gas to European countries through Ukraine’s GTS.

European Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson told journalists that the EC will take all necessary measures to eliminate Russian gas completely. Under the RePowerEU plan, the EU will rid itself of Russian gas by 2027 at the latest.

At the same time, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that Ukraine will not extend its current transit contract with Russia but is ready to maintain gas transit to the EU at the request of European countries. In this way, he confirmed Robert Fico’s January statement. Then, the Slovak prime minister, after negotiations with Shmyhal in Uzhhorod, said that gas transit through Ukraine would probably continue.
