The EIB will finance the overhaul and upgrade of Ukraine’s hydropower sector.

At URC2025 in Rome, Ukraine signed several strategic hydropower agreements. The main partner is the European Investment Bank (EIB), which is providing a €200M loan. The first installment of €120 million will go to Ukrhydroenergo to support the stabilization and modernization of critical hydroelectric plant equipment, greatly improving their reliability and operational sustainability.

An agreement was also signed with the Italian firm Webuild, which will help develop the Dniester hydroelectric complex. This is vital for boosting the balancing Ukraine’s energy system capabilities, especially as renewable energy’s share in the network grows.

Additionally, cooperation has been arranged with Voith Hydro (Germany), focused on creating modern training programs and retraining personnel needed for Ukraine’s hydropower modernization in line with international standards.

These agreements are a significant step toward building a strong, resilient, and modern energy system. International support not only helps restore damaged infrastructure but also promotes long-term solutions for Ukraine’s energy independence and green transition.
