The American Oakland Institute criticizes the land reform in Ukraine.
The executive director of the American Oakland Institute, Anuradha Mittal, addressed a letter to the heads of key global financial institutions at the IMF, the World Bank, and the EBRD, in which he declares the risk of Ukraine losing its economic independence due to the introduction of current policies in the land market.
The Oakland Institute’s report demonstrates how oligarchs and foreign companies (mainly European and North American) are expanding their control over Ukraine’s agricultural lands.
“A principled and tough report with a telling title and an emphasis that Ukraine, mistakenly or not – under the pressure of transnational corporations that invest in agricultural holdings of Ukraine – was stimulated to commit to an ill-conceived and unprepared land market. The price of the issue is the loss of economic independence”, the first vice-president of the Associations of Farmers and Private Landowners of Ukraine, Mykola Stryzhak, commented on the report.
However, the main problem is that the state launched an ill-conceived law on land turnover.
