Romanian businesses aim to establish joint ventures in Ukraine: Which sectors are prioritized?

Nasty Vladoiu, president of the Romania-Ukraine Bilateral Chamber of Commerce (CCBRU), highlighted that the primary sectors attracting Romanian companies towards the Ukrainian market, in anticipation of reconstruction efforts, include construction, IT, architecture, and related services. He mentioned that the growth of the defense industry and Ukrainian technological capabilities has generated significant interest among Romanian firms wanting to collaborate with Ukrainian businesses.
According to Vladoiu, more than 700 Ukrainian companies registered in Romania last year, particularly in the IT sector, construction, beauty services, trade, and freight transportation. Meanwhile, the presence of Romanian firms in Ukraine has been limited so far, mainly owing to security concerns and legislative ambiguities. Nonetheless, several companies in transport, construction, and services are operating in Ukraine’s border regions.
The CCBRU has established a platform to connect Romanian businesses willing to support Ukraine’s recovery. Last year, the total trade balance between Ukraine and Romania was $3.47B, 35.9% lower than in 2023. One of the reasons for the significant decrease is that in 2024 the volume of grain exports from Ukraine to Romania decreased by 99%.
