Orban will disrupt the summit of EU leaders discussing aid to Ukraine and negotiations on its accession.

According to Bloomberg, at a meeting of diplomats last week Hungary wanted to hold a “strategic discussion” about the bloc’s financial support to Ukraine and how Russian sanctions have affected EU countries before it even starts talking about providing additional financial aid or security commitments. Hungary is also preventing the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU and the interim review of the EU budget.

“The aggressive tone of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán suggests that he is no longer fazed by threats to withhold funds from the EU fund for Hungary. EC President Charles Michel was due to visit Budapest on November 27 to meet with Orbán, but EU officials are preparing for the worst,” the publication writes.

Hungary effectively blocked the EU’s decision to grant Ukraine €50B and is blocking the 12th package of sanctions against Russia. However, if Budapest does not change its position, individual EU governments are still able to create their own aid package for Kyiv.
