In Volyn, plans are underway to establish the country’s first hydrogen plant focused on exporting products to the EU.

Austrian energy firm Wien Energie, alongside Ukrainian UDP Renewables, aims to develop an industrial green cluster in Volyn featuring the hydrogen production facility. If realized, this initiative will mark Ukraine’s first industrial energy cluster centered around renewable energy sources.
Investment company UDP Renewables forecasts a rising demand for hydrogen, in light of the EU’s strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Consequently, Wien Energie, fully owned by the municipal government of Vienna, is exploring avenues to create these clusters. The company is investing significantly in renewable energy options such as solar, wind, geothermal, and hydrogen. The GREENWEST PtX project, which aims to generate eco-friendly hydrogen from renewable sources in the Volyn region, includes plans for exporting products to the EU.
Wien Energie anticipates that this initiative will facilitate the replacement of gas with a new, climate-neutral alternative. Moreover, the company will serve as a hydrogen buyer while also developing methods for transporting it from Volyn to Vienna.
