How much of Ukraine’s energy should be generated by wind power in order to successfully integrate into the EU’s energy system?

In this context, experts assert that wind power is gaining strategic importance as a priority area for development. The EU aims to increase its share of renewable energy sources to 42.5% by 2030, with the electricity sector targeted at approximately 69%. Specifically, the share of wind power within the EU should rise to 35%. Therefore, for successful integration into the EU energy system, it is advisable for Ukraine to aim for wind power contributing at least 20-25% of its energy needs by that time.

Currently, Ukraine’s wind power production capacity is under 5% after many wind facilities were damaged in the war. As a result of the Russian invasion, Ukraine lost up to 80% of its existing wind power capacity, mostly in the south. However, despite the war the wind power industry is recovering. For instance, in the coming years the Wind Parks of Ukraine company has ambitious plans to develop up to 1.5 GW of wind power generating capacity in Transcarpathia.

Experts highlight the importance of leveraging European experience to engage both businesses and communities in the expansion of wind power plants.
