Fertilizer production in Ukraine decreased by 80% last year.
In 2022, Ukraine produced only 1.13 million tons of nitrogen fertilizers and imported 4.3 million tons. In 2021, 1.4 million tons of nitrogen fertilizers were imported, and the total production exceeded 5.2 million tons. Before the war, three factories were in constant operation in Ukraine: Rivneazot, Severodonetsk Nitrogen Union, and Cherkasy Azot. Dniproazot also operated, but with some intervals. The domestic production volume exceeded imports by more than 70%. However, at the beginning of the war, only two factories remained in operation – Rivneazot and Cherkasy Azot. Before July 2022, Ukrainian farmers could still buy fertilizers at pre-war prices, and it was not as expensive as in the EU. After July, prices began to rise rapidly. As a result, farmers found themselves in a difficult financial situation.
