Estonia: Ukraine must fulfill 100% of the criteria for the start of EU membership negotiations.

The head of the Estonia’s government, Kaja Kallas, said that Ukraine will not receive “any discounts” on the way to the EU and must fulfill all the criteria for the start of accession negotiations. “We supported the expansion, and we told Ukraine and Moldova that you have to fulfill 100% of the criteria and there will be no discounts for you,” Kallas said before the start of the summit of EU leaders in Brussels.

As of today, Ukraine has completed only two out of seven steps outlined by the European Commission. These are the judicial system reform with the creation of the High Council of Justice and the High Qualification Commission of Judges and bringing media legislation into full compliance with the EU directive.

Moreover, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen believes the EU risks importing instability if it eases its standards on democracy and corruption to speed up the accession of Ukraine and other candidate countries.

At the same time, The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, said that she supports the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s membership in the EU in mid-December this year.
