Denmark will significantly increase its defense budget and get rid of Russian gas amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, said Danish Prime Minister Matte Frederiksen. “Historical times call for historical solutions. Putin’s senseless and brutal attack on Ukraine marked a new era in Europe, a new reality,” said Frederiksen. Denmark will gradually increase defense spending to reach 2% of GDP by 2033, equivalent to an increase in annual defense spending of about DKK 18B ($2.65B). “We are talking about the largest investment in Danish defense in recent times,” Frederiksen said. The main parliamentary parties agreed that Denmark must become independent of Russian gas “as soon as possible.”
