The Russian Navy is blocking more than 90 civilian ships in the Black Sea region designed to transport grain and other food, stated the UN Security Council through First Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman. “About 30% of world wheat exports usually originate from the Black Sea region, as well as 20% of corn and 75% of sunflower oil. However, Russia has bombed at least three civilian ships carrying goods from Black Sea ports worldwide, including one chartered by an agricultural company,” said a spokeswoman for the US State Department. She stressed that the consequences of Putin’s war are being felt far beyond Ukraine and directly affect global food security.
