Businesses account for 80% Ukrainian electricity imports.

Ukrenergo notes that a significant electricity deficit is present for most hours of the day, and the import crossing is almost fully loaded with 1650-1700 MW out of the 1700 MW allowed. 80% of this capacity is imported into Ukraine by businesses that use a government decree that prevents electricity from being shut off to any business that imports 80% of its needs.

Ukrenergo and ENTSO-E are currently working on the technical possibilities to increase the permitted import volume. A determination of possible volumes that will allow for the safe functioning of the Ukrainian and European energy grids is ongoing. It will be recalled that in June, Ukraine imported a 10-year record volume of electricity from the EU – 858,400 MWh.

However, the Energy Research Center says: “We don’t have any hours when the crossing is full. That is, we do not import the entire amount of electricity that we could import from Europe.”

Also, to stimulate the energy autonomy of Ukrainian businesses, the Cabinet of Ministers adopted a resolution that prevents electricity from being turned off for businesses that generate more than 80% of their own electricity.
