Ukraine is preparing to launch its biomethane register and is discussing the attractiveness of investment in the industry.
The head of the State Agency for Energy Efficiency, Hanna Zamazeyeva, said that the development of the biomethane register is currently underway. Once implemented, exporters can supply biomethane to Europe through the GTS Operator.
“We need to stimulate both export and biomethane trade in general. This is necessary to reduce dependence on Russian gas and fulfill international obligations to increase the share of renewable energy sources,” she said.
Deputy Minister of Energy Mykola Kolisnyk confirmed that the necessary technical conditions for developing biomethane production have been created in Ukraine, so it is now necessary to create conditions to attract investment to the industry. Among the potential ways to attract manufacturers might be discounts on equipment through a refinancing mechanism.
At the same time, Naftogaz is ready to support investment in expanding biomethane production and promoting its transportation. It also has ambitions to buy this gas from Ukrainian producers.
