Spending on nuclear weapons reached a record $91B; this is enough to provide greenenergy for 12 million homes.

As reported by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), the nine states that possess nuclear weapons spent $91.4B on them last year. This spending is effectively useless, as the nuclear states agree that a nuclear war is unwinnable, so one should not be conducted.

At the same time, $91.4B per year “could provide wind energy for more than 12 million homes or reduce the global climate change financing deficit by 27%.”

The report indicates that nuclear powers spent $10.7B more on nuclear weapons in 2023 compared to 2022. The US spent $51.5B, China spent $11.8B, and the Russian Federation spent the third largest amount at $8.3B. Over the past five years, nuclear powers have spent $387B on their arsenals.
