Speaking remotely to the French parliament, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he hoped to obtain candidate country status for membership in the European Union by the end of France’s presidency of the EU Council. It will be recalled that the European Commission promised to prepare an official opinion on Ukraine’s readiness to receive EU candidate status as soon as possible. Zelenskyy also noted that he hopes for France to take a leading role in the post-war security system, which Ukraine is already trying to initiate. He also asked France to provide more defensive weapons, further tighten sanctions against Russia, and for French companies to withdraw from the Russian market.
