Zelenskyy calls on Northern European countries to influence Germany regarding the Ukraine’s invitation to NATO.

President Zelenskyy, at a meeting with the heads of governments of the Nordic Council in Iceland, once again stated the importance of inviting Ukraine to NATO. During his speech in Reykjavík, he emphasized that Kyiv does not expect to join the North Atlantic Alliance immediately but expects an invitation “as an indicative sign.”

The Ukrainian leader asked the Nordic Council, which includes Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, to pressure their partners throughout Europe – especially in Germany. Zelenskyy expects “a political decision that will bring geopolitical clarity to Ukraine and all of Europe and strengthen us in diplomacy with Russia.

“If Ukraine receives an invitation to join NATO, it will become an irresistible defense against Russia’s imperial ambitions,” the Ukrainian president emphasized.

Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected Ukraine’s immediate invitation to NATO because “a country in a state of war cannot become a member of NATO, and an invitation to the Alliance “is usually quite quickly linked to membership.”
