Western countries can easily increase their support for Ukraine.
Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine has been going on for two and a half years now, but the invasion of Russian territory shows that given sufficient resources, Ukraine can strengthen its position on the battlefield and even start an offensive and win the war. Also, scientists say the economic resources of the West significantly exceed those of Russia. The combined GDP of the US, EU, and Britain is nine times higher than that of Russia, and the combined GDP of the EU and the UK is five times higher. Last year, Russia’s military spending amounted to 5.9% of GDP, while Ukraine spent 37% of its GDP on its military. However, Russia spent $150B more than Ukraine. If the West were to provide a similar amount to Ukraine, allowing it to keep pace in military spending, this would correspond to 0.26% of the GDP of the US, the EU, and Britain combined, and 0.48% of the GDP of the EU and Britain. If we assume that Ukraine needs 30% more resources to regain most of its occupied territories, then the amount of support would need to be $265B. This corresponds to 0.45% of the US, the EU, and the UK and 0.85% of the GDP of the EU and the UK.
