Washington has not yet discussed with the EU easing Russian sanctions to facilitate a temporary ceasefire agreement in Ukraine.

David O’Sullivan, the EU’s special representative for sanctions, stated that Washington has not yet contacted the EU to address Russia’s request for sanctions relief – one of the country’s primary demands for a temporary ceasefire agreement in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, most European leaders have dismissed the idea of easing sanctions against Russia unless the country completely withdraws from Ukraine. Consequently, Europe’s commitment to uphold sanctions against Russia could create tension in its relationship with the US, as President Trump advocates for a swift conclusion to the war in Ukraine.
“The European Union’s position is that this is a crucial lever of influence in any negotiations with Russia, and it should be utilized, but with caution and gradually, only within the context of securing a lasting and sustainable peace,” O’Sullivan emphasized.
In contrast, Trump entertains the possibility of partially lifting Russian sanctions, although he frequently warns Moscow of new restrictions should it fail to engage in peace negotiations earnestly.
