Under Merz’s government, Germany could become Ukraine’s primary partner.

Former ambassador to Germany and future representative of Ukraine to the UN Andriy Melnyk believes that under Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Germany could become Ukraine’s main partner.
“This is the historic moment when Germany can become a true leader in Europe, not only an economic power. Future Chancellor Friedrich Merz has such geopolitical ambition,” he noted.
Melnyk pointed out that Germany used to be proud of being second only to the US in the provision of arms to Kyiv. In 2022, Merz pressured Chancellor Scholz to have Berlin provide Ukraine with heavy weapons. According to Melnyk, the future chancellor thinks in historical terms and can go down in history as one of the most successful heads of German government, as well as a true European leader who can save Ukraine by dramatically increasing the amount of military assistance at this critical moment.
In the new German government, Boris Pistorius will remain the Minister of Defense, and generally supports the continuation of military assistance to Ukraine, but he has not yet supported the transfer of Taurus long-range missiles to Kyiv.
