Ukrainian scientists predict that two years of war will reduce the grain harvest by 60%.

The forecasted gross harvest of grain in 2023 may amount to 34 million tons, which is 37% less than the figure for 2022 and 60% less than 2021, the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine said. As for oilseeds, this year the gross harvest is expected to be 19.3 million tons, 13% more than in 2022 and 15% less than in 2021. According to preliminary estimates, this year area devoted to grain crops will decrease by 45%, and the harvest will reduce by 50-60% compared to 2021. Among the reasons for this, experts cite a decrease in total cultivated areas, a change in crop structure, and a decrease in grain crop yield. In addition, a lack of funding and the need for significant operational cost saving caused a 50-60% decrease in applied fertilizers.
