Ukraine’s victory in the war is a basic requirement for its membership in NATO.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg noted: “I expect that the allies will make an important announcement in the run-up to the Washington summit and at the summit itself regarding the supply of a larger amount of the military equipment that is urgently needed for Ukraine to win as a sovereign independent state. We must ensure that Ukraine wins. This is the absolute minimum for Ukraine to become a member of the Alliance,” he noted.
The Secretary-General notes that during the summit the leaders of the Alliance countries would strengthen NATO’s role in providing military assistance to Ukraine and undertake long-term financial commitments.
“For the past several months, delays in providing military aid to Ukraine have had consequences on the battlefield. But now the allies are increasing their support,” he said.
Stoltenberg recalled that since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, Ukraine’s allies have provided military aid worth €40B every year.
