Ukraine’s path to NATO and the EU: What obstacles exist and how will they be overcome?

The decision on the irreversibility of Ukraine’s path to NATO was made by the allies; the question is when the discussion will resume, said Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olha Stefanishyna at the Kyiv Security Forum.
“In July 2024, all NATO allies, including the US and EU countries, recognized that there is no alternative to Ukraine’s membership in NATO. This decision was made by consensus, it has been published, and it is an official NATO document. To change this, a consensus must be reached on this issue,” the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.
Regarding EU accession, Ukraine’s main obstacle is currently Hungary. The confrontation between the countries has intensified in recent days. In particular, on May 9 the Security Service of Ukraine announced the exposure of a network of Hungarian military intelligence agents. Amid news of the arrest of Hungarian spies in Ukraine, Hungary expelled two Ukrainian diplomats who were allegedly working “undercover” in Budapest. Ukrainian authorities also decided to expel two Hungarian diplomats. Subsequently, Hungary postponed talks with Ukraine on national minorities that were scheduled for May 12.
