Ukraine’s allies are discussing an almost complete ban on exports to Russia.
According to Bloomberg, G7 officials are debating the idea ahead of the leaders’ May summit in Japan. The new approach will fundamentally change the current sanctions regime – all exports will be prohibited, with a few exceptions. Currently everything that is not specifically subject to sanctions is allowed to be exported.
If the G-7 leaders support the move at the summit, exceptions must be agreed upon. And it is likely that medicines and agricultural products, especially food, will be included in these exceptions.
But, according to EU rules, all member states would have to adopt these new norms. Given the backlash from companies that still export goods to Russia, this will provoke heated debate.
Currently, goods from Europe, the US, Canada, and Japan, which have reached Russia are valued at $66B. The G-7 believes this is too great a benefit for the Russian economy.
