Ukraine plans to launch long-term electricity trading auctions with three EU countries.

The National Commission for State Regulation in the Spheres of Energy and Utilities (NKREKP) has agreed on new rules for long-term capacity allocation on the border of Ukraine with three EU countries. This will allow for the introduction of a joint monthly allocation mechanism through the Joint Allocation Office’s (JAO) electronic platform. The introduction of a coordinated monthly mechanism through the JAO platform opens access to electricity trading with Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania on new, more favorable terms for Ukraine, the NKREKP explained.
The Joint Allocation Office is a specialized European platform that organizes auctions that allocate the capacity of interstate power transmission lines. The first auction with Ukraine’s participation on the JAO platform was held on January 16 2024, together with Polish operator PSE – these were joint daily auctions. In the same year, auctions began on the Ukraine-Slovakia and Ukraine-Hungary transmission routes. Ukraine has not yet conducted auctions with Romania on the JAO platform.
