Ukraine looks to become a key biomethane supplier to the EU, aiming for a 20% market share.

According to Heorhiy Heletukha, the head of the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, Ukraine is on track to become the primary supplier of biomethane to Europe. He noted that in the future, the proportion of Ukrainian biomethane in the European market could reach 20%.
He also pointed out that Europe has ambitious plans for the production and consumption of biomethane, with a target of approximately 35 billion cubic meters by 2030 and 100 billion cubic meters by 2050. However, European production is currently estimated at only three billion cubic meters annually. Given the existing trends in the alternative energy market, the EU may only be able to boost its own production to 20 billion cubic meters of biomethane within the next five years.
The expert attributed this delay in European biomethane market’s development to a shortage of raw materials for processing. Therefore, opportunities exist for Ukraine, as its biomethane production capacity is set to increase to 111 million cubic meters this year.
