Ukraine is asking Finland for Allegro high-speed trains, which used to operate in Russia.

As Yle writes, the former general director of Ukrainian Railways (UZ), Oleksandr Kamyshin, personally discussed this issue with the Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, during her recent visit to Kyiv. Allegro trains are suitable for Ukraine’s railway network. VR, the Finnish railway company, confirmed receipt of the Ukrainian request on March 14. But VR’s director of urban transport, Topi Simola, said the Finnish company could not decide the Allegro issue alone. Allegro trains are owned by Oy Karelian Trains Ltd, which was founded in 2006 and is owned by VR and Russian Railways. “VR cannot independently lease trains or make decisions about their future,” explained VR’s top manager.
