Ukraine has run out of SAMP/T air defense missiles and the allies are looking for air defense systems for Kyiv.

Ukraine is facing challenges with sourcing air defense missiles; in particular, it has exhausted its supply of charges for SAMP/T systems. Additionally, it has not received a single missile for the Crotale short-range anti-aircraft system in 1.5 years. Currently several Patriot air defense units are positioned around Kyiv, but they cannot ensure 100% protection against ballistic attacks.
Le Monde notes that the rise in the number of air targets, their diversity, and the complexity of flight paths is straining the capabilities of Ukrainian air defense. The military states that the country needs significantly more long-range systems, such as the American Patriot, the German IRIS-T, and the Franco-Italian SAMP/T.
Meanwhile, NATO allies have been negotiating for weeks to secure another Patriot system for Ukraine, but there has been no progress. European officials indicate that the air defense issue will be addressed when US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visits NATO headquarters in early June. However, the Trump administration has been hesitant to make high-profile statements about arms supplies to Kyiv, fearing it might disrupt negotiations.
