Ukraine has reduced its gas imports by 86% after increasing its production.

According to the DiXi Group, in 2023 the state imported 1.2 billion cubic meters of gas. However, in the first half of 2024 import volumes fell to 170 million cubic meters, 98% of which came from Hungary.

When forming the gas balance forecast, decreased demand for blue fuel in electricity generation following destruction of a significant number of TPP and CHP plants was taken into account. In previous years, an average of 2.5 billion cubic meters of gas was purchased to ensure Ukraine’s needs.

Additional risks to supply are possible long periods of abnormally low temperatures and continued Russian strikes. In this case, experts assume that Ukraine will have to resort to greater imports.

Ukraine has produced 16.2 billion cubic meters of gas since the beginning of the year, which is 0.32 billion cubic meters more than in the same period in 2023. As of October 15, only 12.3 billion cubic meters of the planned 13.2 billion had been accumulated in Ukraine’s underground storage facilities.
