Ukraine has announced a proposal to eliminate EU dependence on Russian energy sources.

The 63rd meeting of the Permanent High-Level Group of the European Energy Community (EEC) took place on April 20. Ukraine, which holds the chairmanship of the EEC this year, has initiated several issues related to the state of Ukraine’s energy system during the war and sanctions against Russia. As a result, the Ukrainian faction proposed a comprehensive approach to rid the EU of its dependence on Russian energy resources, which provides for:
- Replacement of Russian hydrocarbons with liquefied natural gas and oil supplies from other countries and delivered by tankers.
- A 9-month waiver of the ban on Russian oil will allow suppliers from other countries to enter into contracts with European customers and increase their production.
- Rejection of Russian nuclear fuel.
It is proposed to apply an “Iranian model” of sanctions to gas transported to Europe by pipelines, under which payment for gas will be kept in special European accounts until Russia ends the war and pays compensation for the damage it has caused.
