Ukraine cut spending in foreign currency by 50% in the purchase of coal.

Last year, Ukraine’s expenditure on coal and anthracite imports halved compared to the previous year – to $1.18B. According to the State Customs Service, the country imported 24% of the amount of coal last year compared to the previous year – 4.6 million tons (in 2021 – 19.5 million tons). In 2022, before the full-scale invasion, the largest suppliers were Russia, the US, and Australia. Russia’s share decreased from 62% to 37%, to $431M, and the US’ share increased from 20% to 26%, to $309M. Before that, for many years, supplies from the Russian Federation composed the lion’s share of coal imports. Also, Ukraine imported $200M (17%) of its coal from Australia, and $240M was imported from other countries.
