Ukraine and the US will sign a security agreement during the G7 summit in Italy.
The Presidents of the US and Ukraine, Joe Biden and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, will sign a bilateral security agreement during the G7 summit on June 13-15. The agreement between Ukraine and the US is considered the most significant among those Ukraine has concluded, and will include long-term support commitments, including military training, intelligence sharing, and economic assistance.
In the last few months, tensions have arisen between the countries due to Biden’s reported absence from the upcoming summit in Switzerland, the six-month delay in Congressional approval for military aid, the lack of progress on Ukraine’s NATO membership, and the ban on the use of American weapons to strike military targets in Russia.
Despite all that, Ukraine continues to sign security guarantees with many countries. On May 31, Ukraine signed two such agreements with Norway and Iceland. This year, Norway will provide about €1.2B in military aid and commit to the long-term program, providing almost €6.4B for 2023-2027. Also, from 2024 to 2028, Iceland will allocate about $27M annually.
