Trump promises to reclaim as much of Ukraine’s Russian-occupied territory as possible as part of a negotiated peace agreement, but NATO membership is off the table.

US President Donald Trump stated that during the negotiations to end the Russian-Ukrainian war the US will aim to restore as many of the Russian-occupied territories to Ukraine’s possession as possible. He added that the peace agreement should benefit both Kyiv and Moscow. Therefore, he may consider easing sanctions against Russia, but only after reaching an agreement.

Additionally, Trump mentioned that Vladimir Putin would need to make concessions, though he did not specify what those would be. At the same time, Trump emphasized that the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO would not be part of the peace agreement, as, according to him, “this is what started it all.” Trump also admitted that he cannot guarantee a peace agreement will be finalized, as “a lot of strange things happen with agreements.”

Meanwhile, the Russian Federation indicated that Russia would not agree to a ceasefire along the current front line, as Kyiv still controls areas of the Zaporizhia, Luhansk, Donetsk, and Kherson regions that were annexed by Russia.
