Trump might impose new sanctions on Russia this week amid frustration with Putin.

US President Donald Trump is considering these sanctions due to his frustration with Putin’s continued aggressive actions toward Ukraine and the slow progress in peace talks. The restrictions are likely not to include new banking sanctions. Other options for pressuring the Russian leader to make concessions at the negotiating table, particularly a 30-day ceasefire, are also being discussed.

However, Trump may refuse to impose new sanctions because he is “tired” of peace talks and may abandon them altogether if the “last push” fails. Moreover, it remains unclear what will happen if the US backs down from the peace process and whether the US will continue to provide military support to Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the Süddeutsche Zeitung, citing an internal document from the German Foreign Ministry, pointed out that Europe and the US are no longer in contact or exchanging information on countering Russia’s circumvention of sanctions.

“Cooperation between the G7 countries on this issue has also lost momentum. How the Europeans and Americans intend to agree on an additional package of sanctions under these circumstances remains a mystery,” said David O’Sullivan, head of the EU sanctions committee.
