To reduce dependence on the Russian Federation, the EU will resume uranium mining in 2024.
According to the company’s website, the Finnish company Terrafame has announced its intention to start mining uranium by the summer of 2024. Uranium will be exported abroad for further processing, after which it will be used to produce nuclear energy. The facility in the Finnish city of Sotkamo is expected to reach full capacity by 2026, when uranium production is forecast to reach around 200 tons per year. Finland will become the only EU country that will mine uranium. Until the mid-2010s, small amounts of uranium were mined in the Czech Republic and Romania. Terrafame received permission to mine uranium at the Sotkamo deposit in eastern Finland in 2020. The permit is valid for the existence of reserves but not longer than until the end of 2050.
