The Western allies have pledged to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses in response to Russia’s latest deadly attacks.

The EU will supply Ukraine with more air defense systems and expedite their delivery, according to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. Her statement followed another Russian strike on Kyiv on the night of July 31, which resulted in 31 deaths and 159 injured civilians. On August 1, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that Germany will deliver two Patriot air defense systems to Kyiv. He stated that launchers will be delivered “in the coming days”, with additional system components arriving within two to three months. In response, the US will send Berlin new Patriot systems at an accelerated pace, with Germany funding the effort.

Moreover, the Pentagon has signed a $3.5B contract with Raytheon Technologies to produce advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles (AMRAAM) and related equipment, which will be transferred to Ukraine and allied countries. Production is scheduled to continue until the third quarter of fiscal year 2031. US President Donald Trump strongly condemned the recent deadly Russian attack on Kyiv. “What Russia is doing is disgusting…”, he said at a White House press conference. According to President Zelenskyy, in July alone Russia launched nearly 4,000 Shahed strike drones and approximately 260 missiles of various types against Ukraine.
